Andy Dalton leaves Bengals to sign with Dallas Cowboys

Quarterback Andy Dalton has signed a season contract with the Dallas Cowboys and will be the assistant to Dak Prescott.

The former Cincinnati Bengal star has agreed to a US $ 3 million deal. Dalton could however earn up to $ 7 million through performance bonuses.

Dalton was released on Thursday by the Bengals, while the Ohio side wanted to leave the field open for Joe Burrow to become the starting quarterback. The Bengals selected Burrow to lead the draft in April.

A native of the Houston area, Dalton shone in the university ranks in Texas with TCU before being selected in the second round of the 2010 draft by the Bengals.

The Cowboys have relied on Cooper Rush as a reservist behind Prescott for the past two seasons. Dalton, 32, represents the Cowboys' largest investment for a reserve quarterback since Prescott replaced Tony Romo, who was injured in 2016, taking him from the starting role.

Dalton has played 133 games with the Bengals and led the team to five consecutive playoff contests from 2011 to 2015. However, the Bengals have lost in the first round on each occasion.

Dalton has a 70-61-2 record as a starter with the Bengals and holds the team records for touchdown passes (204) and completed passes (2757).

Head coach Zac Taylor signaled the end of the Dalton era for the Bengals by leaving him out for three games halfway through the season last fall. The move rocked Dalton and some of his teammates. Dalton was also disappointed that the team did not trade him before the deadline and the Bengals ended the campaign with a 2-14 record.

The Cowboys have named Prescott as their franchise player, but Prescott has yet to accept the nomination, which will earn him $ 31 million next season. Both parties have until July 15 to reach a long-term agreement.

Prescott, 26, has stood out from the start and was named the NFL's offensive rookie par excellence in 2016. The Cowboys and their representatives have been negotiating a long-term contract for about a year.

The Cowboys disappointed last fall. They won their first three games, but ended up 8-8 and missed the playoffs. Head coach Jason Garrett's contract was not renewed and Mike McCarthy was hired.
